Frequently Asked Questions
- Which photographer/filmmaker most inspires you, and why?
-
That’s a really tough one because it’s between two for me: Chase Jarvis and Jimmy Chin. Chase has really pushed the boundaries of what photographers can achieve in terms of developing the craft and building communities – his images are superb, but his commitment to educating others certainly helped me when I was getting started. Jimmy is just such an inspirational photographer. Having shot in the world’s harshest conditions, from the top of Everest to summits in Antarctica, he's made some jaw-dropping frames. Now also a well-known director and filmmaker, Jimmy really shows what’s possible when we follow our passions!
- What is your most memorable shooting experience?
-
Difficult as there have been so many great moments, but I think camera trapping in the Amazon for jaguars a few years back just takes it. Being alone in the rainforest building remote cameras was a dream. I spent weeks waking up to the sounds of wildlife all around, cleaning my cameras due to the harsh rainforest conditions, resetting after they were trashed by rain or wildlife... Then, eventually, all the hard work paid off when I nailed a shot of a Jaguar in the Amazon, merely feet form my camera!
- What one piece of advice would you offer to people starting out in your industry?
-
Find a project and keep working on it. Having a consistent theme will help you develop your shooting, giving you the opportunity to experiment, try new ideas and focus in on the fundamentals of the craft.
- What is the best shooting tip you've ever received?
-
From Chase Jarvis: don’t just be better, be different.
