Frequently Asked Questions
- Which photographer/filmmaker most inspires you, and why?
-
I am really inspired by Daniel Etter; a Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer who has been capturing the stark realities of social inequality in India, the turmoil of conflicts across the Middle East and the struggles faced by migrants amidst the European refugee crisis. I'm particularly drawn to his distinctive style that evokes deep emotion, his handling of light and colour, and the profound significance of his subject matter.
- What is your most memorable shooting experience?
-
One of my most memorable shooting experiences was photographing a person called Megan and her sister Mia. Megan is non-verbal and I learned a lot about communication that day. While we couldn’t exchange words, we connected through music, laughter and simply having fun. Once we had connected and found a way to communicate, the photo shoot was easy and enjoyable. The photos remind me of my childhood and how lucky I am to have grown up in such a safe place.
- What advice would you offer to people starting out in your industry?
-
Seek collaborations and make friends in the industry. Help and learn from each other. Believe in yourself and your work, and don’t let negative comments or opinions get in the way of your creativity.
- What is the best shooting tip you've ever received?
-
Building a successful career in photography takes time, patience and perseverance. I used to care too much about what others thought of me and my photography. Negative comments would knock my confidence and throw me off track. One day, someone reminded me that negative commentary or opinions are louder than positive ones. They reminded me to stay focused on my goals, learn from setbacks, and keep pushing forward, even when faced with challenges.
