Expanded Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 Di III VXD G2 for Sony E-Mount Key Features:
Redesigned and Updated
As the successor to the RXD model, this updated lens is equipped with an array of features that result in an even higher level of image quality, overall lens performance and usability. The 28-75mm f2.8 Di III VXD G2 is equipped with an intricate and redesigned optical pathway comprised of 17 premium glass elements, arranged into 15 groups. Within these groups, there’s the use of specialised lenses such as Low Dispersion and Glass Molded Aspherical lenses that significantly minimise aberrations and offer edge to edge sharpness across the entire focal range.
Additionally, the close focus (or Minimum Object Distance) has been improved, allowing you to focus as close as 18cm. This translates to a working distance of 4.4cm at the MOD. Furthermore, this means that the maximum magnification ratio is 1:2:7, enabling access to the world of close-up, macro photography.
AF Performance
This lens improves on its predecessor’s AF system with the addition of Tamron’s VXD linear motor focus mechanism. This system is exceptionally responsive and offers a potent combination of impressive speed and precision. In fact, this mechanism is approximately twice as fast as the 1st gen model meaning you can have confidence that the lens will be able to accurately see the frame you see in front of you from the moment you hit that shutter button. Furthermore, adding to the flexibility of this lens, is that the VXD motor is impressively quiet which not only allows for more discretion in sound-sensitive situations but is also ideal for capturing video.
Ergonomics
Another area of improvement is the exterior and ergonomics of this 2nd-gen lens. It features an improved grip texture on both the focus and zoom rings that of course, allow for smoother and more precise movements. This results in more accurate images as well as providing a more premium feel to the overall build. It also features a shinier, more glossy finish that further adds to that high-quality feel. Finally, this lens has been built with reliable moisture resistance that whilst isn’t weather-proof, it will allow you to use this lens in a range of different scenarios.
Our Review
Why we love the Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 Di III VXD G2 for Sony E:
- The optical performance of this lens is phenomenal.
- The specialised lenses really do improve the quality of the images that the lens can produce. We tested the stills performance using the Sony A7R IV and there was clear, edge-to-edge sharpness in every frame.
- It has a very short minimum focusing distance and that offers so many more options for an already versatile lens.
Use this lens for:
- It has a versatile focal range and this really does allow you to use the lens all day without needing another lens in tow.
- It can as easily be used for street or travel photography as it can be used for portraiture. And, of course, the minimum focusing distance allows you to get up close to subjects and capture all the fine details.
Look and feel:
- It seamlessly pairs with Sony mirrorless cameras, matching the super-high-quality look and feel of the cameras that it is designed for.
- It’s compact and surprisingly lightweight considering it’s a pro-level lens. And, the improved grip on the focus/zoom ring really does give more precise control. This is particularly useful for the close-up capabilities of the lens. They also don’t have that unpleasant rubbery feel of some other lenses.
Is it better?
- Is it better than the G1 version? Definitely. The G2’s AF speed is much faster than the previous version and along with its improved grip texture, you’re able to capture shots more efficiently with a higher success rate.
- The image quality is also noticeably higher than its predecessor which is all the more impressive considering it’s still a relatively small and lightweight lens.
- A couple of other new additions are a super-useful focus hold button, as well as a USB-C port that allows you to make use of Tamron’s Lens Utility for customising your lens function and firmware updates.
