As the successor to the iconic Sigma 35mm f1.4 Art, this lens prides itself on pro-level optics. Sigma stripped it right back with this new and improved lens - with its wide-standard focal length and bright aperture to suit portrait, wedding, astro, and travel photography, as well as various forms of filmmaking. The 35mm f1.4 DG DN Art consists of a reduced form-factor and lightweight construction, lending itself to content creators requiring a high-functioning stills/video prime lens. Expanded Sigma 35mm f1.4 DG DN Art Lens Key Features:
State of the Art Optics
Outstanding optical performance has always been at the forefront of the Sigma Art line. This is why the 35mm f1.4 DG DN Art consists of 15 elements in 11 key groups to include two Special Low Dispersion (SLD) elements, an Extraordinary Low Dispersion (ELD) element, an ‘F' Low Dispersion (FLD) element, and two aspherical elements. In short, this leads to a massive reduction in all types of optical aberration to include axial chromatic aberration - something that cannot be rectified in-camera. Even at its widest f1.4 aperture, this lens has the capacity to control sagittal coma flare extremely well. This stops bright points of light from flaring around the edge of the frame; a nice little feature for astrophotographers.
The lens further utilises 11 diaphragm blades to produce a smooth, rounded bokeh effect. This suits portrait photographers looking for an ultra-sharp lens with minimal colour bleeding. If you find yourself shooting in harsh backlit environments, Sigma have included their tried and tested anti-ghosting and anti-flare technology. This allows for optimal contrast within your images, whilst keeping them free from troublesome flares.
Rapid and Responsive AF
With a high-functioning focusing mechanism, the 35mm f1.4 DG DN Art makes good use of its in-built stepping motor. This essentially controls a focusing lens group composed of a unique, lightweight element, which allows AF to remain responsive and near-silent. You can therefore track moving subjects with ease, utilising the tactile manual focusing ring for precise and smooth operation (includes focus mode switch). When paired with its sophisticated optical construction and compact form-factor, you are left with an incredibly exciting prime lens suited to a variety of shooting styles.
Tactile Functionality
Sigma have thought long and hard about the specific placement of their camera functions. With a textured aperture ring allowing for custom aperture control, or when set to Auto, it can be manipulated via the camera system. Further to this, the aperture lock switch can be enabled to minimise the risk of accidental knocks when set to Auto mode. For filmmakers, the aperture ring can even be de-clicked for smooth and efficient adjustments to exposure - ideal for handheld shooting situations.
Other features to be found along the lens barrel include a focus mode switch and an AFL button, which can be custom set to suit your individual shooting needs. This has been positioned for optimal thumb control, conforming to Sigma's overall design strategy of functionality and performance. A detachable petal-type lens hood is also included when purchasing a Sigma 35mm f1.4 DG DN Art, which effectively reduces visible flares whilst offering added protection to the front optics. Be sure to utilise the lock mechanism to secure it in place, as well as the rubberised grip for quick-action attachment/removal.
Ready for Adventure
To further support photographers and videographers looking to use this lens in all manner of shooting environments, the 35mm f1.4 DG DN Art offers an impressive level of durability to withstand extended professional use. The lens barrel incorporates key areas of dust and splash-proof coating to include the function buttons and along joins between constituent parts. As well as this, there is a secure rubber gasket surrounding the mount, with water and oil repellent coating also applied to the front optical elements.
