Exceptional Image Quality

Samyang prides itself in the image quality it offers from its impressive and expansive prime angle lens range. This very same quality that’s born from exceptional craftsmanship has been brought through to this lens. The lens features a highly advanced and intricate optical structure that is built from 17 premium glass elements arranged into 14 separate groups. This includes the use of 2 Aspherical, 1 Hybrid-Aspherical, 3 High Refractive and 3 Extra-Low Dispersion lens elements. Together, with the use of UMC Ultra Multi-Coatings, the images that are captured offers a stunning optical resolution that is rich in detail and contrast. Furthermore, various aberrations, as well as unnecessary light dispersion, are significantly reduced along with minimised flare and ghosting.

The optical design of this lens provides an impressive short minimum focal distance relative to its focal range of just 35cm. This, of courts, adds huge versatility and allows you to capture unique perspectives within your film or photography. Aiding this is its 9-bladed aperture diaphragm with a constant maximum f2.8 aperture. This allows you to not only play with super-smooth background blur and beautifully circular bokeh but also offers enhanced control of depth of field that helps with subject-background separation. Of course, having such a wide and fast maxim aperture all the way through the focal range allows you to get creative and confidently shooting in low-light conditions.

Autofocus Performance

Not only is this lens versatile for its focal range and aperture control, but it’s also afforded an exceptionally fast and efficient autofocus system. Driving this mechanism is Samyang's Linear STM (Stepping Motor) technology. This powerful motor allows for the larger and heavier focus lens group to be controlled and moved more precisely and quickly and results in much smoother performance. Furthermore, this mechanism is also impressively quiet which is ideal for both those situations where discretion is key but more generally for film work where the sound of a noisy autofocus system can ruin a scene.

Optimised for Video

Whilst this versatile zoom lens offers a whole range of photographic creativity and range, it’s video recording where this lens excels. Specifically optimised for videography, this lens features a range of functions that help videographers capture film more efficiently as well as open up more creative options.

Firstly, the lens features a Par-Focal system. Par-Focal means that when one objective lens is in focus, then the other objectives will also be in focus. It’ll even maintain focus on the subject when zooming in and out. This is a function that is optimised for video shooting lenses and generally is only featured on top-tier cine zoom lenses! Secondly, adding to the cine-like features is the AF speed that is carefully monitored and control during video recording to reduce focus wobble resulting in super-stable footage. Finally, the lens has a Linear MF Focus Control that provides convenience to videographers by matching the torque of the focus ring as closely as possible to that of a manual focus lens when shooting video in manual mode.

Is there an AF/MF switch on the lens?

There is an AF/MF switch that also features a customer selection. This mode switch allows you to adjust the aperture with the focus ring. You can use the separately sold lens station to customise what this function is used to suit your shooting style. More functions will be added through firmware updates in the future.

Is this lens weather-proof?

The lens features protective weather-sealing that is effective against light rain, snow and dust. Additionally, there’s a micro-patterned rubber on the focus ring that not only feels good but offers more precision when shooting in adverse weather.
