This particular lens is referred to as a "pancake" zoom capable of wonderful wide-angle to portrait views. It has a great focal range from wide-angle to normal (16-50mm) and a minimum focusing distance of only 0.2m ensuring crisp images during close-ups. Other noteworthy features include in-lens vibration reduction and the silent control ring.

Within those groups, there’s one extra-low dispersion element that reduces colour fringing and chromatic aberrations for improved clarity/colour accuracy, as well as four aspherical elements, that minimise spherical aberrations and distortion throughout the zoom range for sharper, more accurate rendering. Finally, there’s also a Super Integrated Coating that suppresses flare and ghosting for improved contrast and colour fidelity when working in strong lighting conditions.

Autofocus Performance

The Nikon Z 16-50mm f3.5-6.3 DX VR Lens is fitted with a powerful stepping motor that delivers impressively smooth, quiet, and fast autofocus performance that benefits both stills and video shooting. But, there’s also a full-time manual focus override that utilises an internal focusing design where only the internal lens groups move whilst focusing. This means that the compact nature of the lens is maintained and it results in faster focusing speeds.

In-Lens Vibration Reduction

The in-lens vibration reduction ensures that images come out looking their best even if the user is shooting without a tripod or in low lit conditions. Video remains shake-free even if it has been recorded whilst walking, perfect for vlogging. Blur reduction is also available when the user does want to shoot with a tripod. It facilitates shooting at shutter speeds at 4.5 stops slower than previously possible.
