Nikon’s DSLR range includes cameras for total photographic newbies, expert professional photographers, and everyone in between. We’ll quickly take a closer look at some of the models on offer, but first let’s run through the main categories of DSLR.
Nikon FX-format vs DX-format: What’s the difference?
If you’ve been shopping for Nikon DSLRs, you may have spotted cameras referred to with the terms FX-format and DX-format. What do these terms mean?
They simply refer to the sensor size. FX-format cameras are Nikon’s full-frame cameras – these have larger sensors, which means they are able to capture images with greater dynamic range and overall better image quality. This does come at a cost, and full-frame FX cameras tend to have higher price tags.
DX-format cameras have smaller APS-C sensors. This means they aren’t quite as good in low light, and don’t quite have the dynamic range of full-frame. However, APS-C is still a very respectable sensor size – larger than you’ll find in most compact cameras – and even Nikon’s entry-level DSLRs have sensors of this size. This is one of the reasons they’re such good value.

Frequently asked questions
- Do all Nikon DSLRs shoot video?
-
Yes, all contemporary Nikon DSLRs shoot video at a minimum resolution of Full HD. The only situation in which you might need to be careful is if you’re buying a really old Nikon camera pre-owned.
- Do Nikon DSLRs have internal memory?
-
No, you need to pick up a compatible memory card.
- Do all Nikon DSLRs have Wi-Fi?
-
All current Nikon DSLRs have Wi-Fi – again, the only time you’ll need to double-check is if you’re buying an older camera second-hand.
- Which is the best Nikon DSLR?
-
It depends on what you need! The most sophisticated and powerful Nikon DSLR is the Nikon D6, but in truth the best camera for you is the one that meets your needs and your budget. The Nikon DSLR range is designed to offer a wide range of cameras across this spectrum.
- What does “DSLR” mean?
-
DSLR is an acronym, which stands for “Digital Single-Lens Reflex”. This refers to the fact that the image captured in the lens is reflected into the viewfinder via a mirror. Compact system cameras don’t have this – hence their more common name, “mirrorless”.
