By refining the classical focal length of 50mm, this Leica lens stands as a fast standard prime with key apochromatic capabilities. The combination of anomalous partial dispersion and high refractive index glass allows this lens to focus solely upon red, green, and blue wavelengths at the same plane. This eliminates chromatic aberrations, whilst spherical aberrations are greatly reduced by the intricately positioned aspherical element. This lens further utilises a floating element to ensure clarity and sharpness throughout its vast focusing range (0.7m to infinity). As with all M-mount lenses, this 50mm f/2 is built around a tried and tested manual focus design, with the added convenience of a focusing tab to achieve precise focal control. As a compact 50mm prime lens, it excels in a whole host of different image-making disciplines. If it's high-quality, stylised performance that you require - look no further than this 50mm f2 prime.

Expanded Leica 50mm f2 APO-Summicron-M Asph Lens Key Features:

Apochromatic Explained

APO lenses such as this Leica 50mm f2 employ three intricately crafted elements that are constructed from anomalous partial colour dispersion glass and two high refractive index elements. Apochromatic correction is, therefore, possible via each of the three elements having carefully matched low optical dispersion properties to accurately focus red, green and blue light. In short, this ensures the minimisation of chromatic aberration, further providing detailed colour accuracy and clarity throughout the full aperture range. To reduce spherical aberrations for a sharp, clean image from edge to edge - one aspherical element is employed.

To explain the group comprising of the floating element, it is best to examine the optics both behind, and in front of the aperture. Behind, is a similar lens element to that of the Summilux-M 1:1.4/35 mm ASPH, a super-sharp general purpose 35mm lens for journalistic-style photography. In front, is a Gaussian type optical construction - with the "floating element" moving independently to the rest of the lens mechanism during focusing. This combination significantly reduces distortion, whilst further increasing sharpness for a more consistent illumination.

Keep It Close

As a high-performance prime with an emphasis on vivid colour, compact usability, and the rendition of every detail - the Leica 50mm f2 is an ideal travel companion for lifestyle photographers. The bright f/2 maximum aperture excels in difficult lighting conditions, whilst the manual focus design affords much greater control over the depth of field. It is close in design to that of a wide-angel lens but without the distortion, lending itself to street, portraiture and landscape photography. This 50mm f2 is able to ensure natural rendition in any and all photographic situations, utilising a built-in extendable lens hood that shades and protects the front element for reduced flare and ghosting. The lens front is also threaded to accept 39mm screw-in filters.

The Magical M-mount Range

The Leica M portfolio is a collection of lenses developed to fulfil the most stringent quality demands for both digital and analogue photography. Their image quality is second-to-none, pairing effortlessly with Leica's range of compatible high-resolution camera systems. M-mount lenses were first made famous by street photographers such as Henri Cartier-Bresson, Robert Frank, and Sebastiao Salgado. Unrivalled in resolution, contrast, structure, tonal depth, and overall performance - the Leica M-mount range consists of a special breed of camera lens.
