Expanded Fujifilm GFX 50S II Digital Camera Key Features:
The Sensor
The GFX 50S II is capable of great things and it all starts with its imaging sensor. The camera uses a 51.4MP sensor that delivers exceptionally high quality, high-resolution images that retain an incredible amount of detail. This is achieved using an intelligent and specialised design that utilises small light-collecting microlenses on the sensor that in turn create a wider gap between adjacent pixels, resulting in boosted light resolution per pixel and therefore, increased image sharpness.
A result of having a larger light-receiving area per pixel is that the camera features an incredible ISO sensitivity and dynamic range, as well as enhanced tonality and control over highlight/shadow clipping. This means that the images you take will capture more detail and definition of your subject/scene. Additionally, a bonus of such a large imaging sensor is you have significantly enhanced control of depth of field, allowing for beautifully smooth subject-background separation.
Upgraded AutoFocus
Among the huge range of upgrades that the GFX 50S II sees is an overall improvement to the autofocus system. So what’s new? Well, the speed and accuracy of the upgraded AF performance come down to a combination of the medium-format, high-resolution sensor, the X-Processor 4 image-processing engine and image stabilisation mechanism, all operated with the latest AF algorithm.
This algorithm and X-Processor 4 work together to improve the AF refresh rate which results in higher accuracy Face/Eye Detection, as well as the ability to obtain focus more quickly. During contrast-detection AF, the GFXS II uses its built-in powerful image stabilisation mechanism to control sensor motion blur which further adds speed and accuracy of AF performance. Additionally, there are also improvements to Far AF Tracking and Eye Detection FPS, too!
Image Stabilisation
One of the huge advantages of shooting using medium-format systems is that they naturally capture an incredible amount of detail in a super-high-resolution image. This means that you can zoom in and pick out fine details while retaining image quality. Now, because of this, the images taken need to be as stable as possible (like what you’d expect when using a tripod). For this, unlike its predecessor, the GFX 50S II is equipped with a compact yet highly effective 5-axis In-Body Stabilisation that delivers up to 6.5-stops of Vibration Reduction.
This is achieved using a high-performance gyro sensor and accelerometer that precisely detects motion and results in accurate image stabilisation. What does this mean? The result of such a highly effective IBIS system means that you can capture images in ways that are simply not possible with conventional medium-format cameras without a tripod. It means that the GFX 50S II can be used more like a standard DSLR or Mirrorless camera, shooting handheld but with the exceptional image quality that comes with a 51.4MP CMOS sensor.
Pixel Shift Multi-Shot
This unique function allows you to use the GFX 50S II’s intelligent design to capture and generate 200MP photographs. This function uses the advanced IBIS system to shift the image sensor by 0.5 pixels to incrementally record 16 RAW images and then combine them into a single Digital Negative (DNG) RAW file in the software “Pixel Shift Combiner.”
This produces an ultra-high-definition 200MP image with an incredible level of detail, accurate colour reproduction and edge-to-edge clarity. The shifting of the sensor is meticulously measured to ensure that each pixel records image data in red, green and blue, eliminating false colour reproduction.
The Body
One of the fascinating aspects of this camera is despite the super high resolution, large 51.4MP image output, the body it comes from is impressively compact and lightweight. Somehow, Fujifilm has been able to create a logic-defying body that houses all its internal mechanics, shutter unit and powerful in-body image stabilisation (IBIS) system, while only weighing 900g and measuring 104.2mm high and 87.2mm deep. Furthermore, the ergonomics of this camera are optimised for handheld shooting, such as the grip being altered so that it’s comfortable to use for long periods and with large zoom lenses.
Not only this, but the camera is robust, too. The casing is constructed from a rigid magnesium alloy and features a thicker lens mount base that makes the body more robust and allows for greater lens payloads. The camera also offers effective weather sealing at 60 locations across the body, providing dust- and moisture-resistant and operation in temperatures as low as -10°C.
Ease-of-Use
The GFX 50S II has been designed to help make medium-format shooting more accessible to all users, and with this, the camera features various additions that make the camera simple to use. On top of the camera, there’s a convenient Mode Dial (like you’ll have seen on many DSLR and Mirrorless cameras) that allows for quick, familiar and intuitive mode changes. Also on top is a still to video switch and a customisable 1.8-inch sub LCD monitor that conveniently displays key EXIF settings such as shutter speed, aperture, ISO sensitivity and exposure.
Like many modern cameras, the GFX 50S II features the invaluable addition of a rear tilting 3.2-inch main LCD monitor. This rear panel offers 100% coverage of your shot and can be tilted in three directions which of course enables effective high- and low-angle shooting that would otherwise not be possible with the electronic viewfinder (EVF).

FAQs:
What memory cards does this camera use?
The GFX 50S II has dual card slots and accepts SD/SDHC/SDXC (UHS-II) memory cards. While you can use standard SD cards, if you’re shooting in RAW, you should use high-spec large capacity UHS-II cards as RAW files can be up to 120MB each!
Why would I use the Pixel Shift Multi-Shot mode?
This unique feature that captures ultra-high-definition images is particularly useful for photographing large artworks and historical artefacts. The ability to accurately reproduce life-like colour, textures and minor details makes this the perfect mode for archiving. Equally, this mode could be used for a range of other applications such as ultra-high-resolution landscape photos and for offering the option to zoom in closely to observe minor details of your scene.
Can you use the Fujifilm Remote app with the GFX 50S II?
You can still use the app with this camera. For example, offering remote control if your camera is on a tripod.
