Expanded DJI Mavic 3 Key Features:
The Optical System
Equipped with a Hasselblad L2D-20c camera and 4/3 CMOS imaging sensor, the Mavic 3 is capable of exceptional image quality and overall optical performance. The use of this larger imaging sensor provides the Mavic 3 with a much higher maximum resolution and 12.8-stop dynamic range that retains more detail in highlights and shadows, and as a result, offers a higher quality image. As well as this, the Mavic 3 can more effectively suppress unwanted noise in low-light shooting conditions.
In addition, this drone is fitted with an adjustable aperture and a super-wide 84° field of view. The benefit of an adjustable aperture is that you can now have more control of how your images and films look, allowing you to adjust settings in a wide variety of lighting scenarios. Weighing just 12.5 grams, the 24mm equivalent autofocus lens has an 84° field of view that will capture even more in your frame than ever - An ideal range for capturing beautiful vast landscapes. Finally, DJI has included their advanced Vision Detection Auto Focus (VDAF) technology that is designed to interpret distance data and optimise focusing speed by using multiple vision sensors. This makes for more precise and professional output, be it video or stills.
Colour Accuracy
DJI’s Mavic 3 features highly optimised colour science is will ensure the highest level of colour accuracy and image quality, elevating your content to the next level. First up, Hasselblad’s Natural Colour Solution (HNCS). The result of decades of experience producing exceptional imaging technology, Hasselblad’s HNCS can capture and reproduce highly vivid and accurate colours that require no presents or post-production. With Hasselblad, it’s all about capturing that detail and accuracy straight in the camera and this all starts at the pixels on the sensor, each calibrated to the same level as Hasselblad’s flagship camera body and able to record true-to-life colours. Whilst you’re filming or photographing, RGB colour data is obtained by the sensor and then passed through Hasselblad's unique image processing algorithm and colour processing system to deliver as natural colours as possible.
Video Optimisation
As amazing as the images that the Mavic 3 are, it’s its video performance that is truly outstanding. The Mavic 3’s video capabilities have been optimised to record at higher resolutions and frame rates. The drone shoots up to 5.1K Video Recording, DCI 4K/120fps and supports H.264/H.265 encoding. As well as this, it can capture up to one billion colours thanks to its 10-bit D-Log colour profile that as a result, offers natural colour reproduction and gradations. This allows for advanced flexibility in post-production.
The camera offers an intelligent 28x hybrid tele-zoom and an Explore Mode that allows you to efficiently scout and plan your shots. The zoom means you can record footage from further away which can both save time but also avoid disturbing the scene.
Safer Flying
The Mavic 3 features two advanced mechanisms that are designed for safer flights. One is its Omnidirectional Obstacle Sensing. This system uses multiple wide-angle vision sensors that work seamlessly with the Mavic 3’s high-performance vision computing engine to sense obstacles in all directions precisely and plan safe flight routes to avoid them. This and its APAS 5.0 technology work together to ensure a safer flight that is more enjoyable too, allowing the drone to sense objects then smoothly and quickly avoid them. This means that you can spend less time on obstacles and more time focussing on capturing the perfect shot from up in the sky.
So, What’s New?
Adding to the array of features that the Mavic 3 offers is an extended flight time. Its predecessor offered, in the correct conditions, a long 31 minute maximum flight time. Whereas the Mavic 3 offers a redesigned high-capacity battery that extends the flight time to 46 minutes. In addition, this iteration of the drone has 50% stronger wind resistance that opens up more creative options for your aerial productions. With extended flight times comes greater distance covered. The Mavic 3 has a huge 12km transmission range which means not only can it fly farther but it also can transmit with stability and less video lag.
The first of its kind, the Mavic 3 features FHD High-Frame-Rate Transmission that is able to transmit a 1080p/60fps live feed. This means that you’ll get a smooth live feed, seeing what the camera sees in a resolution similar to what the camera actually records. This is accompanied by a new layer of flight security. With DJI’s Cellular Transmission Dongle attached, whilst in flight, you can seamlessly switch your Mavic 3 to 4G networks for a smoother, more stable connection when O3+ signals are blocked by buildings, trees, or other structures/obstacles. The O3+ transmission system coordinates with 4G transmission, working together to provide an uninterrupted shooting experience.
Our Review
Why we love the DJI Mavic 3:
- The Hasselblad L2D-20c camera and 4/3 CMOS imaging sensor with 24mm equivalent focal length is a real joy to use and produces beautifully detailed images. It’s a big thumbs up from us! And, the vision detection autofocus system was reliable and accurate when testing out the drone. Another thumbs up for us.
- Its 28x hybrid tele-zoom retains a relatively decent level of detail and allows you to be further from your scene without disturbing it. And, the Explore Mode is great for scouting and planning your shots. We found that if you’re going to zoom in, 7x is going to be the best for retaining detail.
- Something we love about DJI drones is the focus on safety. The Mavic 3 somehow has improved on the already impressive return-to-home feature seen on other DJI drones. It’s also covered in sensors that significantly improve its object avoidance.
Use this drone for:
- That Hasselblad camera and sensor combo allow for professional-level image quality that is suitable for any commercial or industry shoot.
- Alongside the professional photography options, its video capture capabilities will be ideal for any content creator. It can capture 5.1K 30p or 4K DCI up to 120fps - the latter of which is crisp, clean and is going to be more suitable for most users and their monitors - the 5.1K, although stunning, isn’t widely used (yet). You can also shoot in 10-Bit D-Log which is ideal for those who want more range in post-production.
Is it better?
- With any new iteration of a product, there are improvements and upgrades. The Mavic 3 is no different and has a range of upgrades ranging from a redesigned high-capacity battery, 50% stronger wind resistance and a huge 12km transmission range - all of which, we think, increase your creative options.
- Another new feature we think is invaluable is the FHD High-Frame-Rate Transmission that will transmit a 1080p/60fps live feed. This means you’re going to get a smooth live feed that demonstrates a closer resolution to the final footage.
