Streamlined Virtual Reality

This lens is designed specifically for (3D) 180° VR capture. Where other VR production would require two separate cameras and a lengthy post-production process, matching the footage from both together; this compact, single mount design simplifies that process. With a stereoscopic 190° field of view, the two offset circular fisheye images captured are perfectly synchronised and recorded side-by-side onto a single Full Frame sensor image, streamlining the entire process.

Furthermore, another time-consuming and complex task in producing VR content is converting dual circular fisheye images into side-by-side equirectangular 180° VR format. However, thanks to Canon’s EOS VR Utility application and EOS VR Plug-in for Adobe Premiere Pro, the conversion process is streamlined. The EOS VR Utility2/plug-in2 converts the files with the need for additional stitching.

Lens Performance

The lens construction is something to behold. With an intricate optical pathway, the perfectly aligned, dual forward-facing fisheye lenses are able to capture exceptional detail and sharpness. Each lens features two UD lens elements that help to correct various aberrations, as well as Canon’s own SWC lens coatings that reduce ghosting and flare, even in backlit shooting conditions. The lens also features a rear-mounted gelatin filter holder for pre-cut ND gels which are used to control light levels when in use on 180° VR video productions.

With the bright, fast and wide f2.8 aperture, this lens also offers impressive low-light performance with accurately synchronised exposure and precise control via a dual Electro Magnetic Diaphragm (EMD). This performance is heightened when used with the likes of Canon’s EOS R5 mirrorless camera body.

FAQs:

Do I still have to stitch together the footage in post-production?

Thanks to the dual lenses and Canon’s EOS VR Utility application, the files are automatically converted and stitched together. Additionally, this software allows you to easily process and export videos/images into different resolutions and codecs (up to 8K in file size). This optimises the final production for suitable VR headsets.

Can this be used as a normal lens?

While you can use this lens on your Canon R mount camera, the resulting images would not resemble standard images and therefore would not highlight the scene you’re capturing. This lens is specifically designed for VR production.
