How to Use the Canon EOS C400 Camcorder
Experience Canon’s Most Advanced Cinema Sensor Yet
The Canon EOS C400 Camcorder uses a 35mm full-frame sensor, utilising 19.2 effective megapixels (from 26.7 MP). It also offers Super 35mm and Super 16mm in-camera crop modes, which is useful when trying to achieve a specific depth of field that matches the look of Super 16/35mm film. This high-resolution sensor is backside illuminated, enhancing low-light performance and image quality. It also provides an impressive 16 stops of dynamic range, capturing a broad spectrum of light and shadow for stunning, detailed shots.
The C400 can oversample from 6K footage, meaning that the camera captures a larger 6K image to be scaled down to a smaller 4K or 2K resolution. This process improves overall image quality, reduces noise, minimises artefacts like pixelation and moiré, and boosts colour reproduction in the final shot.
The camcorder offers exceptional recording capabilities, including 12-bit Cinema RAW Light in LT, ST, and HQ modes, supporting resolutions up to 6K at 60fps and 4K at 120fps. Additionally, the camera features 4:2:2 10-bit recording available through the XF-AVC format. These recording options provide high-quality footage with detailed metadata and well-organised filename structures.
Embrace The Future of Production
This camera embraces the future with cutting-edge features in a mirrorless EOS R system. The camcorder offers frame-by-frame metadata for Virtual, XR, and VFX productions with real-time outputs and corrections.
The C400 supports multi-camera networking, ensuring seamless integration into complex production setups. It uses features such as the inbuilt tally lights to indicate recording status and real-time updates. The camcorder also supports VR Series RF Lenses, such as the Canon RF 5.2mm f2.8 L Dual Fisheye Lens. The future of capturing virtual reality just got easier.
Allow IS and Auto Focus to Take Control
When paired with supported lenses, the Canon EOS C400 Camcorder utilises 5-axis Combination (optical and digital) image stabilisation. The camera’s electronic IS works with the lens’s optical IS via RF mount communication for a powerful effect. The yaw, pitch, and roll axis work horizontally and vertically to correct minor adjustments.
The Canon C400 Camcorder also introduces the renowned Dual Pixel CMOS AF II system to the Cinema EOS lineup. This innovative autofocus technology extends coverage to the entire sensor area, ensuring precise focus across the frame. Users benefit from enhanced detection capabilities, including people, animal detection, and eye, face, head, and body tracking. The system offers faster and more accurate performance, complemented by specialised modes like ‘Face Only’ and ‘Face Priority’. Fine-tune your focus with ten detailed AF speed settings and seven response settings, providing unmatched control and flexibility, no matter your subject.
Build Multi-Camera Workflows
The Canon EOS C400 Camcorder can streamline multi-camera productions with advanced, uncompromised connectivity and control features. With Canon’s remote XC Protocol, the C400 supports remote multi-cam controllers like the RC-IP1000 and RC-IP100, as well as the Canon Multi-Camera Control App. This app provides live view, status updates, and control for up to five groups of four cameras each, making it ideal for complex production environments.
The EOS C400 supports live production via G-Lock, Sync, and RET features. Generator locking (G-lock) enables multiple video devices to synchronise with a common signal, ensuring all devices operate simultaneously. Return Video (RET) enables camera operators to monitor an output or feed from a video mixer, switcher, or other device in the production chain.
Optimise Shooting Scenarios
The Canon EOS C400 Camcorder includes mechanical internal ND filters with options for 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 stops, allowing precise control over exposure in varying lighting conditions. The camcorder offers a triple base ISO, providing native performance at ISO 800, 3200, and 12,800, along with a versatile ISO range of 160-25,600, extendable to 100-102,400. This extensive ISO capability ensures exceptional image quality and flexibility in low-light and bright environments.
Capture Stunning Colour
The Canon EOS C400 Camcorder offers versatile gamma settings, including Canon Log 2, Canon Log 3, Canon 709, BT.709 Wide DR, BT.709 Standard, PQ, and HLG, catering to various shooting and post-production needs. It supports a range of colour spaces, such as Cinema Gamut, BT.2020, and BT.709, ensuring accurate and vibrant colour reproduction.
