Expanded Canon EOS 5DS R Digital SLR Camera Body Key Features:

The Difference between the 5DS R and the 5DS

There's some confusion about the actual differences between the 5DS R and the 5DS camera bodies. For the most part, they are identical cameras. However, it comes down to the low-pass filters in each body. The Canon 5DS's low-pass filter is integrated in a manner in relation to the sensor plane - The overall effect is a very slight blurring on your images to eliminate moiré. When it comes to the Canon 5DS-R, this incorporates a second low-pass filter that is located just behind the IR filter, opposite of the original axis of the first low-pass filter which in turn creates a cancellation effect. The filter placement is set in such a way that it re-aligns the original pixel shift, eliminating the blur and resulting in incredible sharpness and detail in your images.

50.6 Megapixel Full-frame CMOS sensor

The EOS 5DS boasts a spectacular 50.6 Megapixel Full-frame CMOS imaging sensor that is, as of writing this article, the highest resolution sensor ever created in the history of the EOS series of cameras. It is capable of capturing 8712 x 5813 effective pixels that are perfect for the creation of images featuring high levels of realism. This is fantastic when working with fine art, large-scale commercial printing, significant crops, and much more.

61-point High Density Reticular AF

Through the incorporation of 61-point High-Density Reticular AF with up to 41 cross-type AF points, the camera is capable of fast, accurate tracking performance. The AF system is highly sensitive to changes in composition. It can adjust accordingly and quickly ensuring consistency and sharpness during a shoot. The newly-incorporated RGB+IR AF sensor with approx. 150,000 pixels monitors the motion of the tracked subject; whereas, the iTR Intelligent Tracking and Recognition system coordinates the active AF point with the subject's motion. This also aids the consistency of AF precision.

1.3x and 1.6x Crop Shooting Capability

The camera is capable of crop shooting through which the shooting effect is extended by 1.3x and 1.6x. Such flexibility is great for photography. Thanks to the 50.6-megapixel capture, the camera can produce cropped shots with great resolution. For example, images captured at 1.3x (APS-H) are approx. 30.5 Megapixels (6768 x 4512) Large/Fine JPEG. Images captured at 1.6x (APS-C) are approx. 19.6 Megapixels (5424 x 3616) Large/Fine JPEG. The crop function is beneficial in a couple of different ways including, extending the range of telephoto lenses, and improving the subject tracking capability where almost the entire frame is covered with AF points. The user can see image cropping displayed in the viewfinder. It is either masked or overlaid with an outline showing the cropped area. When working in Live View the image is cropped by the effect chosen. Additionally, aspect ratios also can be defined as the camera can shoot in 1:1, 4:3, 16:9, and default 3:2 ratios.

3.2-inch ClearView II LCD Monitor

The incorporated 3.2-inch ClearView II LCD monitor features anti-reflective construction, and ClearView Technology in addition to the outstanding 1,040,000 dots delivering a bright, sharp display. Photographers can utilise it for reviewing their work and settings, and shooting in Live View Mode. When working with Live View, grid lines are displayed in 9 sections with diagonals. The electronic level can be displayed in a similar manner that ensures accurate level by displaying roll. To optimise image review, the dedicated Magnify/Reduce button (16x zoom) has been put into effect. Simply press the button and turn the main dial to use it. There are plenty of available features for organising the images in-camera accompanied by a simple guide.

Intelligent Viewfinder II

The Intelligent Viewfinder II allows users to shoot, change and confirm camera settings in addition to shooting modes, without the hassle of looking away from the viewfinder. The viewfinder shows setting such as exposure level, drive mode, AF operation, metering mode, white balance, electronic level, and recording format amongst other functions. This is possible thanks to the viewfinder being able to display 100% of the composition. This vital information can be displayed or laid over the image for review when shooting. Additionally, numerous views are customisable via the simple user interface.
