You can confidently set up corrected studio lighting ratios between main and fill lights, use as the initial reference shot in a series, and can be used to adjust colours within common photo processing software packages. In short, the perceived colour of white actively changes based on ambient conditions. What is the best way to avoid damaging this product?

The most common way for these types of production tools to be damaged is through fingerprints and greasy hands when used on set. To avoid this, you can apply two small tabs of tape on the two opposing sides for assistants and talent to hold the card.

Can you use this outside for on-location shoots?

The Calibrite ColorChecker Gray Balance can be used outside, ideally held by the talent or model for the first shot to correct any exposure or colour issues. However, it has not been modified in any way and is not suited to use in inclement weather.
