Pre-order the Sony HXR-NX200
At IBC 2018 in Amsterdam, Sony has taken the wraps off a brand new camcorder. The HXR-NX200 is a camcorder armed with a 20.1MP 1.0 type Exmor R CMOS sensor, a nice large sensor that should provide beautifully low-noise images even in low light (to the tune of 1.7lux, if Sony is to be believed).
The NX200 can shoot in 4K and Full HD, with the additional option of capturing footage in 4K then cutting content out in HD in post-production. It captures 4K 25p at 100MBps in XAVC S. It’s also possible to use the HX200 to record Full HD in AVCHD or DV, if that suits your workflow.
The sensor is wedded with a fixed lens offering a 12x optical zoom, 29-348mm in full-frame equivalent terms. This is a G lens of Sony’s own design, designed to work in tandem with the CMOS sensor on the NX200, and it also comes sporting built-in ND filters (2-6 stops) for controlling ingress of light. Three control rings on the lens give it a tactile, hands-on feel, and it carries an aperture range of f/2.8-11.
If the 12x optical zoom isn’t sufficient, the camera also provides digital Clear Image Zoom, which can boost it to 18x when shooting in 4K or 24x when shooting in Full HD.
The HX200 offers an electronic viewfinder with 1.56million dots of resolution, as well as a flip-out 3.5-type LCD offering the same resolution. Also on board is a built-in microphone and two phantom-powered XLR-ports. Dual card slots can take SDHC and SDXC cards, with RELAY mode automatically switching recording from one card to another when one fills up. Sony has also promised some new natural colour science.
