This morning Tamron unveiled a new optic available to buy from July, an 18-400mm ultra-telephoto zoom
Described by Tamron as “the world’s first ultra-telephoto all-in-one” the 18-400mm f/3.5-6.3 provides its users with a massive 22.2x zoom ratio. Designed for APS-C sensors, on Nikon bodies this lens’s equivalent full-frame focal range will be 27-600mm, while on Canon bodies it’ll offer 28.8-640mm. At its widest focal lengths this zoom will be well-suited for landscapes and in-situ portraiture, while at its longest it’ll provide excellent reach for wildlife photography. With these two focal extremes covered, as well as a body length of just 121mm and a weight of only 705g, this zoom is sure to appeal to anyone looking to travel light without sacrificing versatility.
The telephoto zoom at its widest and longest settings
Trying to optically correct such a huge focal range is a challenge, but Tamron promises that with low dispersion and aspherical glass being incorporated in the lens’s 16-element, 11-group construction, aberration and distortion will be effectively minimised for great quality images. An HLD (High/Low torque modulated Drive) AF motor ensures quiet and accurate focus, while a VC (vibration compensation) system helps keep handheld shots sharp.
Other notable features found in this lens include an electromagnetic diaphragm system for precise control of aperture blades, a moisture-resistant construction and a zoom-lock mechanism. The lens is compatible with Tamron’s TAP-in console for firmware updating, autofocus and vibration compensation fine-tuning.
