Adding to their APS-C category, Sony announce the A6600, A6100, a new fast standard zoom and a super-telephoto
Sony today bring us two new cameras within their mirrorless APS-C category, as well two new e-mount lenses. Sony’s A6000 range of cameras is popular with beginners to professionals, with a range of options available, today that range gets even wider with the addition of two new cameras – the A6100 and the A6600.
Sony A6600
The new A6600 will be the flagship in Sony’s range of APS-C cameras. It will feature a 24.2MP Exmor CMOS sensor, 5-axis in-body image stabilisation and improvements to AF performance. The latest generation of BIONZ X image processing engine allows for around 1.8x the performance of the A6500, providing the 14-bit RAW images with incredible texture and detail. Even in low-light the ISO range of 100-32000 (expandable to 50-102400 for stills) can be utilised with improvements to ensure low noise and detailed textures in shadows. Inheriting algorithms from Sony’s full-frame models means the colour reproduction is also improved, especially in skin tones.
Real-time tracking AF is available during movie shooting, and can be selected via the touch screen for easy operation. Real-time Eye AF is also present and the feature can be customised so you can even choose which eye you wish the camera to follow. In the menu system you can select the drive speed and tracking sensitivity of the AF, to optimise AF performance in a range of situations. You can also shoot at 11fps whilst making the most of the impressive autofocus system.
The body itself is and dust and moisture resistant, made from a strong magnesium alloy and so that you can be shooting for longer, it also comes with the same high-capacity Z series battery as the A7R III, IV and A9. This battery means you can shoot for up to 2.2x longer than with the A6500. The shutter mechanism is also built for durability and is tested to 200,000 actuations, whilst ergonomic enhancements help to create a stronger and easier to handle grip.
Both the A6600 and the A6100 benefit from an attractive video specification. Both cameras can shoot 4K in Super 35mm format with full pixel readout and without pixel binning. They can also shoot interval timer for the creation of time-lapse videos and the A6600 has the added benefit of a headphone input as well as a microphone input. For those interested in colour profiles the A6600 can shoot S-Log3 and S-Log2 as well as being equipped with HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma) which supports an instant HDR workflow.
Sony A6100
The A6100 is a camera aimed at those that like to capture experiences and share them easily, perfect for an adventurous soul in a social media driven world.
425 phase-detection and 425 contrast detect AF points cover the majority of the sensor, meaning you can make use of the real-time tracking AF. The A6100 also has real-time Eye AF for both humans and animals, so whether you’re taking holiday shots, shooting portraits or running your pet’s Instagram account, you can rely on the A6100’s autofocus performance. Like the A6600 you can also shoot 11fps to make the most of any moment of action.
Just like the A6600, the A6100 also benefits from some of the technology from the Sony’s full-frame models, with enhanced colour reproduction, especially in skin tones.
The A6100 also has a range of video features making it versatile in many situations. You can capture quick (up to 60x) and slow motion (up to 5x) in camera. These videos don’t need processing so can be shared straight away. A microphone input means you easily control the audio quality of your videos and there is even a 1:1 square aspect ratio for anybody uploading straight to social platforms.
E 16-55mm f/2.8 G
This incredibly compact 16-55mm lens packs a constant f/2.8 aperture which delivers smooth bokeh in out-of-focus areas as well as making the lens powerful in low-light situations. This Sony G lens is designed to offer high-quality optical performance across the entirety of the frame.
E 70-350mm f/4.5-6.3 G OSS
Sony’s APS-C category has, for a long time, been in need of a super telephoto zoom lens – and Sony have delivered. The new 70-350mm super-telephoto zoom has an equivalent focal length of 105mm – 525mm when used on any of Sony’s APS-C bodies, making it perfect for wildlife shooting. It also benefits from built-in image stabilisation, so even at full zoom, you can achieve sharp, clear images.
