Two new lenses and a flash unit announced by Sony today – details here
Joining Sony’s flagship G Master lineup, the new FE 100mm F2.8 STF GM OSS lens is a mid-telephoto prime which the firm says will deliver ‘breathtaking’ bokeh thanks to its unique Smooth Trans Focus (STF) design.
The lens features a newly designed 11-bladed aperture and a unique optical apodization lens element, which works similarly to an in-built neutral density filter with increased density across its edges. This, according to Sony, should create beautiful transitions between in-focus and out-of-focus areas.
The new G Master 100mm also supports contrast AF and focal-plane phase detection AF, and sports a high-precision Super Sonic Motor drive system
A built-in macro mode offers 0.25x close-up capabilities, and there’s Optical SteadyShot image stabilisation to keep things smooth and blur-free.
The lens offers a minimum focus distance of 0.85m. It weighs 700g.
Also announced today is the FE 85mm f/1.8 telephoto prime lens, which Sony recommends for photographers who have recently stepped up to using an APS-C or full-frame camera.
The wide f/1.8 aperture and 85mm focal length make it an ideal choice for portraiture, with a 9-bladed aperture that should produce smooth bokeh. The double linear motor system ensures quiet focusing, and also on board is a focus hold button which can work in tandem with certain modes in Sony cameras. Both this lens and the G Master are dust- and moisture-resistant.
The 85mm offers a minimum focus distance of 0.8m and weight 371g.
Sony has also unveiled the new HVL-F45RM remote flash unit, which is designed to complement the compact bodies in its E-mount line-up. The unit has radio capabilities that work at a range of up to 30m, and its battery life should provide up to 210 bursts.
Its continuous flash performance can fire 40 flashes at a rate of 10 per second. It is powered by four AA batteries and has a guide number of 45.
