Today Sigma has unveiled four brand new optics that will be available in Canon, Nikon and Sigma fits. Let’s take a look…
Sigma 14mm f/1.8 DG HSM Art
Billed as “the world’s first and only f/1.8 ultra-wide angle lens for DSLRs,” this full-frame prime is sure to appeal to astrophotographers and those who enjoy capturing scenes with wide perspectives.
Capable of producing the large depths of field that come with such a wide angle of view as well as the extremely shallow depths of field produced by an aperture of f/1.8, this lens can capture sharp subjects against vast and deep or dramatically blurred backdrops with equal confidence.
Three low dispersion (FLD) and four Super Low Dispersion (SLD) elements are incorporated in its 16-element, 11-group construction, helping to minimise the kind of chromatic aberration often produced by such wide focal length lenses. A large-diameter aspherical lens element also ensures excellent peripheral brightness and reduced distortion in images.
Other confirmed features and specs include:
- Minimum aperture of f/16
- Minimum focusing distance of 27cm
- 9-blade rounded diaphragm
- Fast AF with full-time manual override
- Compatibility with the MC-11 Mount convertor and Sigma USB Dock
- Brass bayonet mount
- Weight of 1,170g
Sigma 135mm f/1.8 DG HSM Art
Optimised for high-resolution full-frame DSLRs, this lens is brilliantly suited for the creation of tack-sharp portraits and close-ups. Its focal length delivers a strong perspective compression effect, while the large f/1.8 maximum aperture creates dramatic bokeh for stunning images
The lens’s hypersonic motor promises outstanding speed and accuracy, and there’s also a focus limiter to help AF respond to distance from the subject. Full-time manual override is also possible.
Other confirmed features and specs include:
- 13 elements in 10 groups
- Minimum aperture of f/16
- Minimum focusing distance of 87.5cm
- 82mm filter size
- AF incorporates Sigma’s floating system
- Compatibility with MC-11 mount convertor and Sigma USB dock
- Brass bayonet mount has dust- and splash-proof construction
- 9-blade rounded diaphragm
- Weight of 1,130g
Sigma 24-70mm F/2.8 DG OS HSM Art
Sigma have promised top-level performance on even the highest-resolution cameras with this Art-line take on the classic 24-70mm f/2.8, the go-to lens for millions of photographers in a wide variety of disciplines.
Touting a hypersonic motor, optical stabilisation and a dust- and splash-proof mount with rubber sealing, the lens has been carefully refined to give professionals everything they need in a standard zoom.
Thanks to its wide aperture, the creation of stunning background bokeh in images and low-light shooting are made a breeze with this full-frame lens attached.
Comprising 19 elements in 14 groups, the 24-70mm’s optical construction has three Special Low Dispersion elements and four aspherical lens elements to reduce optical aberrations. These elements are housed inside a barrel that has been designed for high rigidity, able to easily withstand the rigours of day-to-day use and the challenging shooting situations often faced by pros.
Other confirmed features and specs include:
- Minimum aperture of f/22
- Minimum focusing distance of 37cm
- Full-time manual focussing
- Brass bayonet mount
- 9-rounded diaphragm blades
- Compatible with MC-11 mount convertor and Sigma USB Dock
Sigma 100-400mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM Contemporary
Offering excellent reach for wildlife and sport photography in a relatively compact package, this ultra-telephoto zoom builds on the success of Sigma’s larger 150-600mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM to provide uncompromising image quality and advanced features.
Thanks to optical stabilisation, sharp handheld shots are made achievable even at the lens’s longest focal lengths, while a push/pull mechanism in addition to the regular twist operation of the zoom ring aids speedy angle-of-view selection.
Weighing in at 1,160g and measuring only 86.4mm x 182.3mm, this optic remains portable enough to be used on the fly and without support. With a minimum focus distance of 160cm, it’s suitable for close-up shooting as well as distance work.
Other confirmed features and specs include:
- 21 elements in 15 groups
- Minimum aperture of f/22
- 9-rounded diaphragm blade
- 67mm filter size
- Hyper-sonic AF motor
- Dust- and splash-proof mount
- Compatibility with MC-11 mount convertor and Sigma USB dock
The launch dates and prices of all four optics are currently TBD.
