Replacing 2014’s X-E2 and 2016’s slightly updated X-E2S, Fujifilm has launched the X-E3, a compact and lightweight CSC that’s aimed at enthusiast shooters.

This camera is built around the same acclaimed 24.3MP X-Trans CMOS III sensor and X-Processor Pro processing engine utilised by the company’s flagship CSC models, the X-Pro2 and X-T2, yet it carries a substantially lower price-tag.

This combination enables a 200-12,800 native ISO range, while thanks to a new autofocus algorithm, Fujifilm claims it will track subjects half the size, and twice as fast as previous models.

Not just a stills camera, the X-E3 can also record 4K video footage at 30fps, or Full HD at 60fps, which can be outputted to an external recorder via its HDMI port. An input for an external microphone enables improved audio capture.

While the X-E2 had a non-touchscreen monitor, the X-E3 has been fitted with a 3-inch, 1.04m-dot touch-sensitive display for control of focus point selection and shutter during shooting, as well as playback navigation of captured shots.

This fixed display is paired with a 0.39-inch, 2,360K-dot EVF with 100% coverage of the frame. The X-E3 is the first camera in the X series to offer Bluetooth low energy connectivity, allowing users to pair a smartphone and remotely transfer files with minimal power use.

Fujifilm has slightly redesigned the form factor of the X-E3, but has stayed true to the camera’s predecessors in producing a compact and lightweight device well-suited for day-to-day shooting, with a deeper grip and thumb rest providing improved ergonomics. A focus lever, as first introduced on the X-Pro2, has been added to the back of the camera, allowing users to intuitively change the selected focus point with the camera held to the eye, while a C position on the exposure compensation dial means up to +/- 5 stops of exposure adjustment is possible in 1/3 steps.
